MetaMask is one of the best-known wallets for exploring Web3. It can help you connect to decentralised applications, manage digital assets and interact with blockchain networks.
But setting up a wallet is not just a case of downloading an app and clicking through the screens. Your recovery phrase is the master key to the wallet, so a few careful habits matter from the very beginning.
What Is MetaMask?
MetaMask is a self-custody crypto wallet. That means you control the wallet credentials rather than handing them to a bank or centralised platform.
With MetaMask, you may be able to:
- Store and manage compatible digital assets.
- Connect to Web3 applications.
- View balances and transaction history.
- Approve blockchain transactions.
- Switch between supported networks.
Self-custody gives you more control, but it also gives you more responsibility. If you lose your recovery phrase, forget where it is stored or share it with someone else, the consequences can be serious.
Step 1: Download from the Official Source
Only download MetaMask from its official website or the verified app store listing. Fake wallet applications and imitation websites are common ways for scammers to steal recovery phrases.
Before installing:
- Check the web address carefully.
- Avoid links sent through unexpected messages or social-media comments.
- Confirm that the publisher and download page are genuine.
- Keep your device and browser updated.
Take your time. A few extra seconds checking the address is much better than rushing into a fake wallet.
Step 2: Create Your Wallet
When you create a new wallet, MetaMask will provide a secret recovery phrase. This phrase can be used to restore access to your wallet.
Write it down carefully and store it offline.
Do not:
- Take a screenshot of the phrase.
- Save it in email, cloud storage or a messaging app.
- Type it into a website claiming to verify your wallet.
- Send it to customer support or another person.
- Share it with anyone for any reason.
Anyone with the recovery phrase may be able to control the wallet. MetaMask support will never need it.
Step 3: Secure the Backup
Store the written recovery phrase somewhere private and protected from loss, fire, water and unauthorised access.
Some experienced users choose a durable metal backup for long-term storage. The important principle is simple: keep the phrase offline, private and recoverable.
Do not keep all copies in one place. At the same time, avoid creating so many copies that you lose track of where they are.
Step 4: Add Funds Carefully
You do not need to fund a wallet simply because you have created one. Start by learning how the wallet works and how transactions are displayed.
If you later send digital assets to the wallet:
- Check that the receiving address is correct.
- Confirm that the network matches.
- Send a small test amount first when appropriate.
- Keep enough of the network’s native asset for transaction fees.
- Remember that blockchain transfers may be irreversible.
A copied address can be wrong, a scammer can change a destination and the wrong network can create a serious problem. Check every detail before confirming.
Step 5: Connecting to Web3 Apps
When you connect MetaMask to a decentralised application, the site may be able to view your public wallet address and publicly available blockchain activity.
A connection does not always mean the site can immediately spend your assets. However, you may later be asked to sign a message, approve a token allowance or confirm a transaction.
Read each request carefully. If you do not understand what you are approving, stop and investigate before continuing.
